Orthodox Calendar 2022 – FEBRUARY: The month of February, called in the popular language and the month Făurar, has, in 2022, 28 days, with 11 hours during the day and 13 hours at night. The most important holiday of this month takes place in the very first days. It is Greeting the Lord or Stratenia, celebrated at the beginning of the month, on February 2.



The feast that falls on a Wednesday and is released from the fish and symbolically marks the moment of worship of the Holy Child before God.

While the believers observe the Lord’s Reception, the people celebrate the Streneia or Bear’s Day. It is said that now it is the balance between the cold and the warm season, making calendar predictions. Our ancestors used to attribute the change of weather to the way the bear behaves, also called the Great or Santa Martin.

Orthodox Calendar 2022 – February 26: Winter Estates – Saturday of the Dead

Also in February are the Winter Estates (Saturday of the Dead), the day when Christians go to church and make remembrance for those who have left us.

According to tradition, on the morning of the winter solstice, Christians must go to church with a cage, wine and prescuri, in order to be sanctified and then divided. Believers can also offer dishes with food, fruit, pies or various foods that the deceased liked.

At the end of the month, the meat is left dry, as Orthodox Christians prepare to enter Lent.

What does Saturday of the Dead mean, Winter Estates

On the Sabbath of the Dead, the Orthodox Church commemorates the dead, by organizing the Memorial Service and the Holy Mass.

To commemorate the dead at church, the parishioners carry a cage, cake or cake, a bottle of wine and the pomelnic in which are written the names of people who no longer live on Earth, to be served by priests.

It is also known as the Saturday of the Dead, and the ritual provides that in each church the Holy Mass and the Parish Service be celebrated!
