Men in distinctive green overalls place barriers on the road. They should prevent the passage of cars into the surrounding street. However, the driver of the blue Volkswagen Polo does not worry about it. He uses the small dimensions of his vehicle and skilfully zigzags not only between barriers, but also among astonished road users. “So you can see for yourself. As long as the intersection is not completely dug up, there will always be someone who doesn’t care about any bans,” comments pensioner Václav Janeček.

It stands at the intersection of Třebíčská Street 9. Května and U Kuchyňky Street. He watches the bustling traffic here on the morning of Monday, March 6. Work has just begun on the repair of sewage, electrical distribution and the construction of traffic lights. It is the traffic lights that are supposed to improve passage through this heavily trafficked place, which is one of the most dangerous in Třebíč. However, in addition to the intersection with U Kuchyňky Street, the construction also required the closure of the opposite U Obůrky Street. There is also a kindergarten of the same name. “I had no idea how to get to kindergarten today. In the end, my little one and I made it across Lesní Street,” says the young mother, who is turning the car here.

Confusion upon confusion

She is not alone, because several other cars appear right behind her in U Obůrky Street. Their drivers first arrive at the barriers that prevent them from connecting to 9 May street and look at them a little puzzled. Then the cars turn and look for a way to escape. Apparently, these are residents of the local neighborhood of Nehradov, which basically has only one access road – and that is U Obůrky street. The link through the aforementioned Lesní Street is literally a nightmare. “Otherwise, you really can’t get here,” confirms Vladislav Nechvátal, who is currently walking along the sidewalk towards the detour route. “The problem is that Lesní Street is very narrow. In some places, it also has a considerably broken surface. I don’t know what it will look like here in a month,” he points out.

But according to him, there was probably no other solution. “That intersection on May 9 is really terrible. Something should have been done about her a long time ago. It’s just a shame that it is at the same time, the bridge in nearby Poušov was also closed. That’s confusion on top of confusion,” Nechvátal thinks.

May 9 Street:
It connects the center of Třebíč with Podklášterí, Nehradov and Týn. From Třebíč, it continues as a drop-off to Kamenice near Jihlava and Polná.
Traffic lights will be erected at its intersection with U Obůrky and U Kuchyňky streets. At the same time, this intersection is located in a bend, which makes it impossible to see, especially for drivers coming from Kuchyňka.
According to data from the 2020 traffic census, an average of about ten thousand cars pass through 9. Května Street every day.

Even drivers who need to get from 9. května street to U Kuchyňky street and then on to Týn have difficulties. They must continue to Račerovicka Street and there turn into Na Příkopech Street, which will lead them to the convenience store in Týn. Truck drivers have it worse. They go around the whole city. This restriction will last until April 2. Even then, however, the work on 9. května street will not end. “From April 2, the next stages of this challenging event will continue. In 9. května street, the work on the replacement of the water supply and sewage system will extend to the Basilica of St. Prokop. In the third stage, Račerovická Street will also be closed, and in July the asphalt surface will be replaced from Račerovická Street and along the entire 9. Května Street,” explains city spokeswoman Irini Martakidisová.
