- VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Köln have faced each other seven times in the past in the DFB Cup, with the Stuttgart team winning four times. The first duel was the final in Ludwigshafen in April 1954, in which VfB won the trophy for the first time (1-0 nV).
- Stuttgart and Cologne meet in the Cup for the first time since 1991 (1-0 for Cologne in the quarter-finals) as Bundesliga clubs, in between the upper-class VfB had prevailed twice against second division Cologne, in November 1999 (4-0) and most recently in December 2012 (2 -1) each in the round of 16.
- In the 1982/83 season 1. FC Köln prevailed on the way to their fourth and so far last triumph in the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart, at home in the semi-finals (3-2 ace).
- Since the Bundesliga was founded, this will be the 99th competitive match between Stuttgart and Cologne, with 39-34 wins (25 draws) in favor of Effzeh. However, VfB has been unbeaten for five competitive games against Effzeh (4S 1U), as long as last between 1983 and 1985 (6, club record).
- VfB Stuttgart lost in the cup in seven of the last eight duels with Bundesliga clubs. The exception in the preseason was also a home game in the second round, with 1-0 against Sport-Club Freiburg – afterwards in the round of 16 against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-2).
