Vespa Elettrica: The Most Modern Electric Motorbike in Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta

After a global debut since 2017, the Vespa Elettrica has finally officially entered the Indonesian market. The price of the electric motorbike sold by PT Piaggio Indonesia is more expensive than the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC).

Managing Director and Country CEO of PT Piaggio Indonesia Marco Noto La Diega said that the Vespa Elettrica was designed to drive in the most modern city of the Italian brand.

“PT Piaggio Indonesia is once again proud to present the Vespa Elettrica, the most modern icon of technology from Italy which is always present consistently with its excellence through the brand from the Piaggio Group. The Vespa Elettrica is indeed ideal for customers who value a combination of environmentally friendly contemporary mobility with a premium Italian lifestyle, ” Marco said in his official statement quoted on Wednesday, (8/8/2023).

Vespa Elettrica first launched at the EICMA Milan exhibition, Italy in 2017. The vehicle is the manufacturer’s first electric motorcycle to be sold globally. The electric motor has been launched first in Europe and the United States. Elettrica costs up to IDR 120 million in the two regions.

In appearance, the Vespa Elettrica is similar to the Primavera sold in Indonesia. It’s just that the manufacturer covered it with a distinctive electric motorbike color, namely a combination of silver and light blue accents. However, there is also a bright red color.

The Vespa Elettrica is powered by a 48 Volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 86 Ah. To charge, simply pull the cable from the compartment under the seat, where the fuel cap is usually located, and plug it into a direct power outlet. Consumers can also plug the cable into public charging stations.

The standard time required for a full charge is at least 4 to 8 hours (with a voltage of 220 V and depending on the ambient conditions and the temperature of the battery during charging).

The Vespa Elettrica battery complies with IP65 certification, making it resistant to low pressure dust and water. PT Piaggio Indonesia also provides a 3-year battery warranty.

Meanwhile, the Power Unit inside the Vespa Elettrica is capable of providing 3.6 kW of power and a peak power of 4 kW, with a torque of around 200 Nm.

Vespa Elettrica offers two driving options according to the needs of its users, namely Power and ECO modes. However, there is also a Reverse mode to facilitate reverse control when maneuvering or parking.

The cruising range of the Vespa Elettrica can reach up to 100 km in Eco mode, and a maximum distance of 70 kilometers in Power mode. Interestingly, the Vespa Elettrica is equipped with a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) which helps charging efficiency. This feature also allows recharging the battery during the deceleration phase while driving.

Power mode can reach 67 to 70 km/h depending on road conditions and rider weight, while ECO mode is meant to conserve energy, extending battery life by limiting speed to 40 km/h.

The Vespa Elettrica is compatible with the VESPA MIA system which allows the user to connect the smartphone to the vehicle via Bluetooth. Information is conveyed in a digital instrument panel that uses a 4.3-inch color TFT screen.

With this embedded technology, users can easily get key vehicle information such as speed, driving mode, remaining mileage in km, and battery charge level (%).

The connectivity system also displays time and distance traveled, environmentally friendly driving quality, and energy capacity. Apart from that, statistics for the last 30 trips can also be displayed, push notifications about battery charge status, number of recharge cycles performed, and many others.

The body shape is made of steel according to the Vespa tradition which is emphasized by a special livery in the color Azzurro Elettrico which runs along the perimeter of the motor shield. Then, the ‘neck-tie’ decoration, rim rims, the name ‘Elettrica’ and seat trim with futuristic gray coating on the body add to the iconic impression of this vehicle.

“The introduction of the Vespa Elettrica is the Piaggio Group’s initial contribution to green mobility which is expected to be increasingly relevant in the coming years, including for the Indonesian automotive landscape,” said Marco.

As for the price, as written on the official website, the Vespa Elettrica sells for IDR 198 million. That price will be higher than LCGC cars in Indonesia.
