Red Bull has come out of hibernation over the past few years and was only really competitive at the earliest from the first European races, where the first major upgrades were introduced. However, that turned out to be disastrous for the joint title aspirations of the team and Max Verstappen and so things have to change this year. Hooking up is the motto.
“I hope we can participate right in front”, says Verstappen in conversation with The Telegraph ahead of the Formula 1 season opener. However, participating at the front does not necessarily mean ‘winning’. “If we are half a second slower than the competition, it will be a difficult story, but with a gap of about two to three tenths we can work. Then much can happen in the long season that follows.”
But what if the gap is indeed 0.5 seconds or more? “That would be very embarrassing, because your Mercedes no longer just fits in with the development curve of that team. However, I can’t change that myself.”
If it doesn’t work out in 2020, then 2021 will come naturally, a completely new year with new opportunities: “During this season, people may shout that I should never have signed up with Red Bull for such a long time, but then I point them out to 2021. With the new rules on the way, that will be one big question mark. “
