Oslo, Nov 24 (EFE) .- The community of verifiers, gathered this week at an international summit held in Oslo, demanded measures against disinformation from YouTube this Friday and reproached Brandon Feldman, director of the platform, for his lack of specific commitments, in a tense debate framed in the aforementioned sessions.
Feldman, Director of News and Civic Associations for YouTube, had a conversation with Baybars Orsek, director of the International Verification Network (IFCN), an institution that organizes the Global Fact 9 world conference of verifiers.
The appearance of the YouTube representative came after more than 80 verification organizations from 40 countries had sent a letter to its executive director, Susan Wojcicki, in November asking her to act against the disinformation spread on the platform.
During the conversation with Orsek, Feldman avoided commenting on the possibility of establishing an alliance with fact-checkers to mitigate the risk of disinformation or the adoption of other measures against false content, while underlining the platform’s commitment to freedom of expression. .
During public question time, representatives of different organizations from Europe, America and Asia harshly reproached YouTube for its inaction and the dangerous consequences of this inaction.
The general director of the British verifier Full Fact, Will Moy, asked for “an explanation” for YouTube’s behavior in the past, “an apology” and concrete actions.
He added that many organizations whose workers suffer harassment and violence because of videos on the platform were represented in the auditorium.
Given these demands, Feldman reiterated YouTube’s willingness to maintain a dialogue with the verifiers to improve in this area, although without defining any measure.
In another session, TikTok Global Program Director Mac Bennett discussed her growing collaboration with fact-checking organizations to fight disinformation.
However, this cooperation was also considered insufficient by various attendees, who asked the short video social network for more effective action against the spread of falsehoods. EFE
