Venezuela receives humanitarian aid to combat Covid-19 | News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, confirmed this Saturday the arrival of several tons of humanitarian aid by the European Union (EU) to combat Covid-19 in the South American country.

“We thank the European Union, Spain and Portugal for the 82.5 tons of medical supplies to face Covid-19 received today in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health of Venezuela,” said Foreign Minister Arreaza.

The Venezuelan Foreign Minister thanked friendly nations for the help they have sent to the country to combat the virus, “we have exceeded 1,500 tons of humanitarian cooperation sent by friendly countries and international agencies,” he added.

The cargo from Spain and Portugal was received at the Maiquetía international airport, located in the La Guaira state of central-northern Venezuela, by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Europe, Yván Gil.

“We are (…) receiving today a shipment that is a contribution made by the European Union, the governments of Spain and Portugal to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, we are talking about tons of medical supplies “stated Gil.

Gil explained that the shipment consists of medicines, vaccines for various pathologies, equipment for protection, for water sanitation, among others.

For his part, the representative of the European Union in Venezuela, Duccio Bandini, said that the objective of the aid is “to facilitate the care of the pandemic” and that it is intended to distribute it in all health centers of the South American nation.

The aid delivery process was facilitated by the United Nations. In this sense, the humanitarian coordinator in charge, Jan Harfst, assured that they are working in coordination with the Venezuelan government for the arrival of these humanitarian aid shipments.

Harfst stressed that the will is to consolidate solidarity among the member countries of the United Nations, to respond to the pandemic.

“The WHO, Unicef, Ocha, bring this humanitarian assistance to be distributed to the most vulnerable groups, who are the most affected by the pandemic and by the economic situation facing the country,” said the United Nations official.
