VEH: Household spending 5.2 percent more on municipal taxes NOW

Dutch households spend an average of 5.2 percent more on municipal taxes this year, Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH) reports Friday. The increase is higher than last year, when municipal taxes increased on average by 3.4 percent.

The waste tax increases this year by an average of 9.5 percent. According to the advocacy club, the costs of collecting garbage have never risen so fast before.

In six municipalities, the waste tax even rises by more than 50 percent. Etten-Leur is the leader. There, the costs for collecting household waste are increasing by 151 euros, an increase of 64 percent.

The reason for the substantial price increases seems to be the higher tax that municipalities themselves have to pay for the landfill and incineration of residual waste. It rose from 13 euros to 31 euros per tonne.

In Laarbeek, households see the bill rise the most. According to VEH, they will spend an average of 220 more on municipal taxes this year.
