Vattenfall wants to leave Berlin power grid – for 2.1 billion euros – BZ Berlin

A secret purchase offer is deposited with a notary. It is irrevocable and affects the Berlin power grid. The Swedish state-owned company Vattenfall recently wants to leave its company Stromnetz to the state of Berlin – according to BZ information for 2.1 billion euros.

How does Berlin, which is again heavily indebted by the pandemic, want to pay for it? At least not directly from the state budget. Appropriate loans would be secured with a national guarantee. For the XXL sum you could build the castle at least three times or add two main stations. And what’s that for? Among other things, 35,088 kilometers of cable, 79 substations and around 1,285 new employees in the state service.

An appraiser is currently checking whether the requested price is correct. “If we accept the offer, it will be retroactive to January 1st next year,” says Finance Senator Matthias Kollatz (SPD). The SPD and the left in particular believe that it is right to bring companies of general interest back after the sell-off of earlier years.

“Stromnetz Berlin” is only responsible for distributing the energy fed into the grid by various companies and collects fees for it. It also operates the 220,000 public lighting systems.

And what about power outages? Statistically speaking, it hits every Berliner once every five years. That matters least in the capital on Pentecost Sunday – consumption is lowest on this holiday.
