The events of the National Film Award “Lielais Kristaps” will take place from 23 to 26 next year. In February. The “Lielais Kristaps” award is organized by the Union of Filmmakers of Latvia in cooperation with the National Film Center and the Ministry of Culture.

The award for lifetime contribution to the cinematic art will be presented to cinematographer Alvi Lapiņa.

V. Kairis’s film “January” received the most nominations – 12, followed by A. Karapetjan’s film “Sema’s Travels” with 11 nominations. Director Abeļi’s film “Restless Minds” received ten nominations, while Linda Olte’s film “Māsas” and Uģ Olte’s film “Upurga” were nominated seven times. Nominees were nominated for the award in various nominations and categories. We publish some of the applications in the newsletter.

Yesterday, at the press conference to present the nominees of the “Lielā Kristaps” award, the director of the National Cinema Center (NKC), Dita Rietuma, stated that there was a large and extensive collection of Latvian cinema this year. This is related both to the objective preview delay processes caused by the pandemic, as cinemas have been temporarily closed, and to the positive trend that the film industry has received additional funding during the pandemic, allowing professionals to work in the sector.

The large number of films that premiered this fall and will be eligible for the ‘Lielā Kristaps’ award was largely influenced by the fact that the films were created as a means to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, the range of films was complemented by several low-budget films made with the support of NKC, Ministry of Culture and State Fund for Cultural Capital.

D. Rietuma also said that the competition is getting stronger every year and it is not so easy for Latvian cinema to break through to world attention and recognition. He expressed his delight that the European Film Academy Awards will be held in Reykjavík on December 10, where the real contender for the award is director Signe Baumane’s film ‘My Marriage Project’, which has already been nominated for ‘Lielā Kristaps” award in the category “Best animated film”. Although Baumane’s film has four strong competitors representing major European countries, mainly France, this is the first time in Latvian cinema: a Latvian film, which is a cooperation project with Luxembourg and the United States, is in the running for the European Film Academy Award.

Film scientist Zane Balčus, representative of the Latvian branch of the International Federation of Film Critics, noted during the press conference that the jury has seen more than 80 films presented at the festival this year. There has been a lot of competition in the feature film category, which applies to both the films themselves and their creators.

In total, 14 feature films, six short films, three minority co-productions, 17 feature-length documentaries, 16 short documentary films, five multiseries, three animated films and 19 student films from the National Latvian Academy of Culture film school were submitted for the film award “Lielais Kristaps”, “RISEBA” and the Latvian Academy of Arts, informs Zane Dzene, Head of Communications.
