Halfway through the match, Van Gerwen seemed to run into a third loss in a row. In a downright sloppy initial phase of both players, Aspinall found himself on the right side of the score with 4-1. A 100 finish for the Dutchman, however, heralded the turnaround.
With an 11-darter, Van Gerwen broke back his English opponent, after which he scored 4-4 via double 6. He managed to break Aspinall again in the eleventh leg from 68 and then loved after a miss The Asp also his own leg.
Aspinall then forced a decisive leg by keeping his own leg in twelve arrows. The two-time World Cup semi-finalist finished first in the fourteenth leg, but missed his chance of a draw. Van Gerwen then hit tops and to his relief took the two points.
In the event of a defeat, Van Gerwen could have moved to sixth place in the rankings, now he climbs up to second place. Leader Glen Durrant is four points ahead of the 31-year-old from Brabant.
