Vaccines against Covid-19 have saved 470,000 lives among those over 60 in Europe

International organizations insist on the effectiveness of vaccination against the coronavirus to prevent deaths and income. In Europe, almost half a million lives have been saved thanks to the vaccine, according to a study released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The study does not include the lives saved by vaccinating people under 60 years old. Includes 33 countries, where they are Spain, United Kingdom, Portugal, France, Italy, Sweden, Austria and Poland.

The number of deaths among adults over 60 years that have been prevented by vaccines is indicated. It has been prepared using the weekly death count as a reference and calculating the difference between the estimates and the real number.

90,000 lives saved

The study, carried out together with European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), highlights that the coverage of vaccines in people over 60 years in the countries included varies.

It is estimated that those countries where vaccination was started earlier in this group was where the most lives were saved. In contrast, in others, the immunization process was limited because the process was slower or ran in parallel with the use of non-pharmaceutical interventions.

In Spain, some 90,000 people have been saved thanks to the vaccine, although some 34,000 people have died.

WHO recalls that vaccines are part of a toolkit and that, by themselves, they will not end this health crisis. Other measures are necessary such as masks indoors, physical distance, hand hygiene or ventilation.
