Vaccination of children between 3 and 11 years old takes off in Antioquia

The recommendation of the health offices of the city and the department is to vaccinate minors, despite the fact that most do not present serious clinical pictures due to the disease.

This weekend, vaccination against covid-19 began in children between 3 and 11 years old in three parts of the metropolitan area. The balance of the start of immunization in this population, in the case of Medellín, was shared by Andree Uribe, secretary of Health of the city, who stated that 4,000 doses were administered.

At first, the official explained that 273,000 children in this age range could access vaccination in the city. For them, according to the official, there are currently 100,000 doses of Sinovac, between a general total of 283,000 doses of that pharmaceutical and Astrazeneca.

“The message, although children do not present critical conditions due to the disease, is that they can infect vulnerable populations,” said the official, who specified that for this reason his vaccination is recommended. In this sense, and due to the high rate of child population, Uribe added that communes 1 (Popular), 13 (San Javier), 7 (Robledo) and 3 (Manrique) will be prioritized through extramural strategies.

It should be remembered that only Medellín, Envigado and La Estrella began this process over the weekend, as the Department had to make adjustments to be able to follow up on these immunizations, which must have the consent of the parents or guardians of minors.

“Adjustments had to be made to load this type of vaccinations. But the guideline, at this time, is that all municipalities start with the process. We have 200,000 doses for these days ”, Lina Bustamante, Secretary of Health of Antioquia, said about the process at the departmental level.

The national figure, according to Gerson Bermont Galavis, Director of Promotion and Prevention, was 22,000 children who received their first dose. “We invite parents to go to the vaccination points, to ensure safe return to schools throughout the country,” said the official.
