Vaccination obligation raises fears in New York of a shortage of medical teams

Published on :

Since Monday, New York State has required all personnel in the medical and paramedical sectors to have at least received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, otherwise they will lose their jobs. A hell of a bet for the state, which could suddenly suffer from shortages of medical teams.

Oblige all employees in the medical and paramedical sectors to be vaccinated, otherwise they will have to leave their post. This shows the importance of vaccination in New York. However, the workforce was already just in time after the fatigue of 18 months of the pandemic and the departures of staff to better paid positions.

State of emergency declared

So, Monday evening, with the entry into force of the obligation for all personnel in the medical and paramedical sectors to have received at least the first dose, the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, declared the state emergency to be able to anticipate potential shortages. « By decree, I will have the necessary emergency powers to be able to respond to shortages where they appear, she declared. This will make it possible to dispatch medically trained National Guardsmen, to dispatch retired caregivers or others whose license has not been renewed, to bring back teams from elsewhere. It is not my first choice. What I would really like is for the people who have been on the bridge from the start to continue in their posts and work safely. »

More than nine in ten have received a dose

A big test for the new governor of New York State. The priority of her mandate, she said, would be the fight against the pandemic.

Despite the eight complaints filed by caregivers against New York State, the most recalcitrant of the 650,000 workers concerned still seem to comply with the new rule at the last minute: on Tuesday, they were 92% to have received at least one injection, compared to 82% a week earlier.
