Vaccination against bird flu is on the agenda

This summer, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality has planned a meeting with the poultry sectors to hear their views and positions regarding preventive vaccination against bird flu. Some pharmaceutical companies have indicated that they want to start developing an avian flu vaccine. This is what Minister Schouten of LNV writes to the House of Representatives.

The situation with regard to bird flu in Europe means that vaccination against bird flu is also on the agenda at European level, according to Schouten. Various rules and preconditions apply within the European Union for the use of preventive vaccination. The European Commission wants to investigate which adjustments to the legal framework are possible.

The European Commission will also request a scientific analysis on vaccination from the European Food Safety Authority EFSA in order to assess the technical possibilities of vaccination.
