Uzbekistan takes over World Cup 2021 after Vienna cancellation

The 2021 Judo World Cup, originally awarded to Vienna, takes place in the Uzbek capital Tashkent. This was announced by the World Judo Association (IJF) on Thursday.

Vienna won the bid in September 2018, but the World Cup was withdrawn in October 2019. The IJF had justified the withdrawal by not paying the second installment on time.

Association hopes to repay two million

The domestic association should have transferred a total of six million euros to the world association for the implementation of the World Cup. Two million have already been paid. The Austrian association now hopes to get this money back.

At the time of the original World Cup award, the turquoise-blue government was in office with Heinz-Christian Strache (FPÖ) as Vice Chancellor and Minister of Sport. This had issued a kind of “blank check” for financial support by decision of the Council of Ministers.

The budget was twelve million euros, three of which were to come from the federal government. After the “Ibiza affair” and the lack of funding hoped for by the city of Vienna, the project came to a standstill.
