USR President Calls for Withdrawal from European Parliament Campaign Due to Personal Situation

USR President Cătălin Drula said on Facebook on Sunday that he asked Elena Lasconi to withdraw from the campaign for the European Parliament, and a party leadership meeting will take place tonight to formalize this decision. “I am certain that Elena understood that the whole public discussion of the last 24 hours, together with the personal situation that became public, affects the campaign and the USR’s focus on the fight against the monster PSD-PNL”, he declared. This comes after the USR mayor of Câmpulung Muscel revealed that he voted “Yes” in the October 2018 referendum to amend the Constitution to define family as a marriage between a man and a woman.

“I had a discussion with Elena Lasconi and asked her to withdraw from the campaign for the European Parliament. We decided to convene the USR National Office this evening to formalize this decision.

I am certain that Elena understood that the whole public discussion of the last 24 hours, together with the personal situation that became public, affects the campaign and USR’s focus on the fight against the PSD-PNL monster. Elena will continue to work for the countryside and will have support to perform in the administration.

USR has a tough and important fight to fight in 2024. Today, more than ever, Romania needs a right-wing alternative and liberal solutions.

In the face of corrupt government and extremist hysteria, we all need real change. We will continue to work day by day to build this change”, says a message published by the USR leader, Cătălin Drula, on Facebook.

Lasconi: I was honest. I’ve never had anything against same-sex relationships

The mayor of Cîmpulung Muscel Muscel Elena Lasconi previously declared that she is willing to withdraw from the USR list for the European Parliament, saying that she is waiting for the vote of the National Bureau in this regard, after the reactions caused by her statement that she voted “YES” in the referendum for the traditional family . She states that she has never had anything against same-sex relationships. Regarding his position in the party, he emphasizes that he does not cling to positions and lists.

“What is politics compatible with?

After my statement yesterday where I was honest and said that from my point of view marriage is between a man and a woman, all the social networks were on fire. I am sorry. I’ve never had anything against same-sex relationships. I have nothing against a partnership made legally to have the same rights. The only sensibility for me as a person is this: the word marriage.

For 51 years I have lived in a society where marriage is between a woman and a man. The education and training I received brought me to this point because I love people and fight for their rights. I have gay friends whom I respect, admire and support. They know that.

The lesson we must learn in this life is love. I find it painful to know and feel with all your being that you love people and find that you get hate back. And for what? I am for marriage between a woman and a man and a legal partnership between people of the same sex.

I believe in human rights and European values ​​just like the team I belong to. But the nuances differentiate us.

That being said, I don’t get hung up on functions and lists. I simply work with love for the country that I love, for the people of Camplungu, for the Romania that we all want. If my work and creed are not enough, if sincerity, tolerance and love are not enough and if a word hurts so much, by the vote of my colleagues from the USR National Office, my withdrawal from the list of candidates for the European Parliament is decided.

That’s it. I continue my job as mayor.

I entered politics to build. Streets, schools, hospitals, communities, but especially bridges to people. I will continue to do this at Campulung and at all times in my public and private life.

USR mayor’s daughter: “I no longer support my mother from any point of view”

Oana Lasconi, the daughter of Elena Lasconi, conveyed, in a video message published on Instagram on Saturday, that she learned from the press that her mother voted “YES” for amending the Constitution in the referendum supporting the traditional family between a man and a woman.

Oana Lasconi declares herself “absolutely disgusted, disappointed and shocked”, being “a member of that community (LGBTQ – ed.)”. She says she will no longer support her mother “in any way”. “I can’t believe that the person I supported in her political career turned out to be a homophobe,” Oana Lasconi said.

Scandal between current and former USR colleagues

In response to Lasconi’s criticism of Clotilde Armand, the USR mayor of District 1 launched an attack on his party colleague: “Your job as mayor is not to say who should marry whom, how the state should intervene in families . If you do not understand this, it means that you have no business in any public office”.

Also, the co-president of the REPER party – founded by former USR members -, Ramona Strugariu, said on Saturday that she does not have a problem with the fact that she voted “Yes”, but with the fact that, under these conditions, she opens the list of candidates for the European Parliament a party that is part of the most liberal European family and a political group that defends human rights every day.
