The university administration, citing safety concerns, has made the decision to cancel the 2024 commencement speech of Asna Tabassum, a respected fourth-year student. Supported by her major in biomedical engineering and a minor in resistance to genocide, Tabassum has generated controversy for her pro-Palestinian activism.
University Focuses on Graduates
In a statement, the university empathized that the objective is to keep the main spotlight on the graduates, and therefore, the decision has been made to release outside speakers and honorees from attending this year’s commencement.
Disappointment for Graduating Student
Tabassum, a first-generation South Asian American Muslim, expressed her disappointment regarding the university’s decision. She has labeled this action as a “campaign of hate,” inferred as an attempt to silence her voice.
Support for Tabassum
The nonprofit Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Los Angeles office criticized USC’s move and referred to it as a “cowardly decision”. CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush reiterated that the attacks against Tabassum are indicative of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism.
