US President Joe Biden has given support to the state of New York, after the powerful winter storm that hit much of the northern United States over the Christmas weekend.
At least 57 people lost their lives in the storm, 28 of them in the city of Buffalo, which was hit particularly hard, according to NBC News.
Dead found in car
Several are said to have been found dead in cars, or to have died of heart attacks after shoveling snow, or because ambulances failed to arrive at the scene.
State authorities say so.
– Some were found in cars, others were found in roadside snowdrifts. We know there are people who have been trapped in cars for more than two days, an Erie County spokesman said Monday.
A 22-year-old woman is among those confirmed dead in Buffalo, according to multiple media outlets, including British ones Independent. She was driving home on Friday when she got stuck and trapped in the car. The woman must have been locked up for 18 hours.
More snow forecasts
Another 9 inches of snow is expected in some locations in upstate New York on Tuesday, according to forecasters National Weather Service (NWS).
– It’s not over yet, County Executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference on Monday.
He called the storm probably the worst of our lifetime, even for an area accustomed to heavy winter weather. writes AP.
Ask for help with food
According to NBC News Several Buffalo residents are said to have asked for help in various Facebook groups.
– There are no shops open. Now we have to use what we have, Scott McCandless (54) tells the channel.
The city’s two largest shopping malls have been closed since Thursday and several families are in need of medicine, food and other necessities.
– I’ll run out of food soon. We have been confined to our home, writes a parent with four children on Facebook.
– Starting to panic, as it will start snowing again, the person writes further.

The storm also created major disruptions to air traffic. More than 15,000 flight departures have been canceled in recent days, writes NTB.
A new so-called bomb cyclone was developing near the Great Lakes on Monday, where atmospheric pressure drops very rapidly during a storm, according to meteorologists.
This resulted in power outages from Maine to Seattle, among other things, but otherwise in the United States most power was restored.
At most 1.7 million households were without electricity, while an estimated 100,000 were said to be on Monday.
