USA: weaker growth in activity in services in August (ISM)

The index, which measures the level of business activity, stood at 61.7%. Growth is slowing from a record 64.1% in July.

growth in services slowed as expected in August in the United States, but it remained solid despite constraints related to employment and supply, according to the index of the professional federation ISM published on Friday.

The index, which measures the level of business activity, stood at 61.7%, a little less than the 62% expected by analysts.

Growth is slowing, however, from the record recorded in July, of 64.1%.

Activity increases when the index is above 50%, and slows down when the index remains above this threshold, but decreases compared to the previous month.

This is the 15th month in a row.

“The tight labor market, material shortages, inflation and logistics issues continue to cause capacity constraints,” ISM Chairman Anthony Nieves said in a statement.

The survey does not, however, mention the effect of the Delta variant of Covid-19, which nevertheless slows down the economic recovery, and caused job creations to fall in August in the United States.

The service sector, vital to the US economy, has suffered the most from restrictions imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The National Federation of Restaurants recently mentioned that the frequentation of establishments was on the decline.
