USA: creation of private jobs below expectations

ADP announces 2.4 million private jobs created in June, against 3.75 million expected by analysts.

Private companies in the United States created 2.4 million jobs in June, in an economy that is gradually reopening, according to the monthly survey of the business services firm ADP published on Wednesday.

This is less than expected by analysts, who expected 3.75 million jobs created.

ADP has also revised its data up sharply for the month of May, now estimating that the American economy created 3.06 million jobs and not destroyed 2.7 million private jobs, as it had indicated previously.

“Hiring among small businesses accelerates in June,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, co-director of the ADP Research Institute, quoted in a statement.

“As the economy slowly recovers, we see a significant rebound in sectors that have experienced the largest job losses,” he said.

“In fact, 70% of the jobs created this month were in the leisure, catering, trade and construction sectors,” he said.

Many federal states have given the green light to the reopening, in particular of restaurants and other places of leisure, after weeks of confinement, which were to stem the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic.

However, in the southern United States – Florida, Texas, Arizona – where containment measures were often less onerous than elsewhere, there is a veritable explosion of new contamination.

Small businesses with up to 50 employees hired 937,000 people.

Large companies, with more than 1,000 employees, have created 772,000 jobs.

The service sector took the lion’s share with 1.912 million jobs created.

The ADP figures are being watched closely because they are seen as a precursor to the government released employment figures.

The official report will be released on Thursday – a day earlier than usual due to independence celebrations – and analysts expect 3.5 million jobs and a slight drop in the unemployment rate, which is currently at 13.3%.
