The US State Department understands the words of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that war is not the best time to hold elections.
According to European Pravda, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel stated this.
“I think it’s important to remember that Ukraine is in this position because Russia continues to wage its full-scale illegal war against Ukraine. Ukraine and its people are fighting for survival,” he said.
Patel also recalled that almost 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory is occupied, and tens of millions of Ukrainian citizens are displaced, many of whom ended up outside the country as refugees.
“Russia continues to conduct daily attacks on civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. We have also made clear to our Ukrainian partners our commitment to support not only Ukraine in its struggle, but also to support a cautious and constitutional approach to preserving democracy in wartime,” Patel said.
It was previously reported that The State Department denied media reports about the supposed discussion of the American and European sides with Ukraine about the beginning of “peace” negotiations with Russia.
Last week the TV channel NBC News reportedthat officials from the US and EU began to discuss with Ukraine the possibility of holding peace negotiations with the Russian Federation. According to the TV channel, in these discussions, in particular, they talked about what Ukraine might have to give up in order to reach agreements.
Diplomatic sources in the EU previously called this information untrue.
