US soldier’s letter to mother delivered 76 years later

A letter that an American soldier wrote to his mother from Germany has been delivered after 76 years. The letter was lost at the time, but recently resurfaced at an American postal company.

22-year-old John Gonsalves wrote to his mother in December 1945: “Dear Mom, I received another letter from you today and I am glad to hear that everything is going well,” he began his letter. “I’m fine, but the food is usually pretty crappy.” He closed the letter with, “Love, your son Johnny. Hope to see you soon.”

Gonsalves’ mother never received the letter; she passed away a long time ago. Gonsalves himself died in 2015, so postal workers have started looking for close relatives. The letter was eventually delivered to Gonsalves’ widow, 89-year-old Angelina Gonsalves of Woburn, Massachusetts.
