US sets new diplomacy policy towards North Korea

(Reuters) – US President Joe Biden is considering using diplomacy to pressure North Korea to renounce its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, the White House said on Friday.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One that U.S. officials have completed a months-long review of North Korean policy.

Complete denuclearization of North Korea remains the goal, she said, but noted that the past four presidents have failed to get Pyongyang to renounce nuclear weapons.

The United States will pursue a “calibrated practical approach that is open to diplomacy” with and explore North Korea, and that will achieve “practical progress” that will enhance the security of the United States and its allies, Jen Psaki added.

So far, North Korea has refused diplomatic advances from the Biden administration. Pyongyang wants Washington and its allies to lift the economic sanctions imposed because of its weapons programs.
