US Senate Delays Vote on Ukraine and Israel Aid Package Until 2023, Reuters Reports

The US Senate will not vote on a package of measures related to providing additional aid to Ukraine and Israel, as well as strengthening security on the country’s southern border, until early next year, Reuters reports.

“Our negotiators will be doing very thorough work during the December and January recess, and our goal is to get something done as soon as we return,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.

Information that an agreement will not be reached before the end of the year was also confirmed by Republican Senator John Thune. “Democrats have waited to the point where it is no longer possible to reach any meaningful agreement on border security before Christmas,” he said.

At the same time, the leaders of the two parties in the Senate, Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell, in a joint statement noted that the negotiators had made “encouraging” progress, but they had not yet been able to resolve some “complex issues.”

In October, US President Joe Biden asked Congress for more than $100 billion in additional security funding, including $61 billion to help Ukraine. The same bill includes military aid to Israel and costs for the construction of protective structures on the southern US border. The White House refused to bring these issues to Congress separately.

The bill has still not been agreed upon due to disagreements between the Republican and Democratic parties. In particular, Republicans want to include in the bill stricter border and immigration measures at the US-Mexico border.
