US Senate Delays Vote on Ukraine Aid Package and Border Security Until Early 2024

The US Senate won’t vote on a Ukraine aid package and enhanced US border security until early next year, although negotiators from both parties continue their work.

As European Pravda writes, this was stated by the leaders of both parties in the Senate, reports Reuters.

“Our negotiators will be working very hard during the December and January recess, and our goal is to get something done as soon as we get back,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.

At the same time, the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Thune, said an agreement would not be reached until January 2024, pointing out that “Democrats have lost time to the point where an agreement is possible” on a border security agreement before Christmas.

In a joint statement, Schumer and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said negotiators were “making encouraging progress” but “challenging issues remain.”

“I can’t tell you how complex this issue is. This is the most complex area of American law,” said Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an independent.

It was previously reported that US legislators are still can’t agree on a border security package in exchange for Republican votes for a bill that includes aid to Ukraine.

Before this the White House repeated the call the US Congress to rush to approve additional funding for Ukraine, warning that current funds will only be enough for one package of military aid by the end of the year.

Pentagon Comptroller Mike McCord previously told Congress that by December 30, his department will exhaust the funds to replenish stocks of weapons sent to Ukraine.

The White House in October asked the US Congress to approve additional funding, including more than $60 billion for Ukraine. But it stalled in the Senate due to bipartisan differences over border security with Mexico.

Any agreement in the Senate, which Democrats control by 51 votes, would also have to be approved by the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives (221 to 213 majority).
