US Senate Completes Voting on $95 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan

Updated 13:44. Voting in the US Senate on the package with Ukraine’s help has been completed

70 Democrats and Republicans voted for the allocation of a $95 billion aid package to Ukraine for Israel and Taiwan (the minimum required was 50 votes), which was a record for the number of votes in the entire history of consideration of this law.

29 senators opposed it, most of them Republicans.

At the same time, it should be noted that the final decision of the United States has not yet been made. Because the bill must then pass the House of Representatives, whose speaker, Mike Johnson, has already criticized the document.

Help to Ukraine from the USA

Let us remind you that the United States has exhausted the funds that were provided to help Ukraine. Just last year, US President Joe Biden asked Congress for more than $100 billion. Of these, the White House wants to direct more than $60 billion to help Ukraine. The remaining funds are to help Israel and Taiwan, as well as border protection.

It was the issue of border security that became a stumbling block, as Republicans refused to support the White House measures. They demanded a stricter immigration policy.

At the same time, representatives of the Republican Party agreed to consider assistance to Ukraine only in connection with border protection.

After this, Democrats and Republicans began negotiations to develop a compromise bill. Work on it was completed the other day, but it never passed the Senate – Republicans voted against it.

Then they decided to consider assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan separately from the border issue. The initiators were the Democrats, but some Republicans in the upper house of the US Congress also supported the idea.

Mere support for the package in the Senate is not enough; it must also pass the House of Representatives. There, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson, who agrees to vote separately from the border only for assistance to Israel, may oppose such an initiative.

Johnson has already submitted such an “Israeli” package to the House for consideration, and it was supported. But the Senate refused to even consider such an initiative.

It is worth noting that the United States has repeatedly emphasized that it cannot continue military assistance to Ukraine without new funding.

On February 6, US President Joe Biden called on Congress to immediately approve new aid to Ukraine. He added that if the bill “is not on his desk,” then the entire American people will know the reason for such failure.
