US sanctions Milorad Dodik, Bosnian Serb leader accused of “destabilizing” the Balkans

The United States on Wednesday imposed financial sanctions on Bosnian Serb political leader Milorad Dodik, accused of “threaten stability“from the Balkans.

The punitive measures announced by the US Treasury target “destabilizing corrupt activities“of this politician who is currently a member of the Bosnian collegiate presidency, as well as a television channel”under his control“, Alternative Television, headquartered in Banja Luka, capital of the Serbian entity.

Destabilizing corrupt activities

Milorad Dodik accelerated in December the implementation of his separatist project, approved by the Parliament of the Bosnian Serb entity.

On December 10, the assembly of the Republika Srpska (RS) gave the government of this entity six months to legally organize its departure from three crucial institutions common to the central state: the army, the judiciary and the taxes.

The project has been denounced by the Western powers but Milorad Dodik, who currently serves as a Serbian member of the tripartite presidency of Bosnia, a country he despises, seems to have the support of Moscow. This tripartite governance was born out of the Dayton peace accords which in 1995 ended the conflict in the former Yugoslav Republic.

The destabilizing corrupt activities of Milorad Dodik and his attempts to dismantle the Dayton peace accords, motivated by his own interests, threaten the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire regionUS Under Secretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson said in a statement.
