US Republican Party Representative Causes Outrage with Comments on Zelensky’s Jewish Roots and Ukraine’s Democracy

Strange statements from a representative of the US Republican Party were made during his speech in Miami, causing outrage in the audience, as well as a wave of criticism on the Internet; American netizens, in particular, recalled the Jewish roots of Zelensky, who lost family members during the Holocaust.

One online post from the Lincoln Project, a Republican group that opposes Donald Trump, called Ramaswamy a “not a serious candidate.”

After a barrage of criticism, Ramaswamy’s campaign tried to justify the candidate’s comments and insisted that he “didn’t mean it.”

Thus, the politician at the debate commented on the Ukrainian leader’s recent call for an increase in American assistance to the country, which reflects the large-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation. This request is supported by some “Republican” representatives in the Senate, but Ramaswami himself is opposed.

“Ukraine is not a model of democracy… It glorified a Nazi in its ranks. A comedian in cargo pants, a man named Zelensky. This is not democratic,” he said.

According to Ramaswamy’s press secretary Trisha McLaughlin, he “did not call Zelensky a Nazi.” According to her, the politician was referring to the September event, during which the President of Ukraine visited the Canadian Parliament, where 98-year-old Yaroslav Gunko, who served in the Galicia division during World War II, was also invited.

At the same time, Ramaswamy’s campaign headquarters admits that without context, the candidate’s remark could be “easily misunderstood.”

“He spoke quickly and his words were uneven,” she explains.

Scandal with the invitation of Gunko

Let us recall that in September the invitation of SS Galicia veteran Yaroslav Gunko to a meeting of the two chambers of the Canadian Parliament, during which Zelensky spoke, caused a scandal. At the same time, Russian propagandists and others began to actively accuse Gunko of being a “Nazi.”

But the Galicia division was not convicted by the Nuremberg Trials or any other tribunal, since they could not prove the guilt of the unit’s soldiers in war crimes.

Let us add that after the scandal, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for inviting a veteran of the Galicia division to Zelensky’s speech in parliament. The speaker of the Canadian Parliament has resigned.
