US President Joe Biden, Ukraine Conflict, and Territorial Seizure by Russia: Interview with Volodymyr Zelensky

US President Joe Biden could end the conflict in Ukraine in five minutes if Kiev gave up the territories seized by Russiabut Kiev will not agree to such a move, said Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with ABC News.

He commented on the statements of former US President Donald Trump, who promised to end the conflict in the first 24 hours of his presidency, if won the November 2024 election Mr.

He added that Trump “once” had the opportunity to end the conflict (Donald Trump was US president from 2016 to 2020).

“Donald Trump once already had those 24 hours. We were at war, not a full-scale war, but we were at war, and I guess he had that time, but he must have had other priorities“, the Ukrainian president thinks.

Asked if he was concerned about the upcoming US elections and Washington’s continued aid to Kyiv after them, Zelensky said it was an internal political issue for the countries. At the same time, he added, Kiev hopes to retain its bipartisan support.

Zelensky did not dispute the Washington Post’s report that Ukrainian officials told CIA chief William Burns during his recent trip to Kiev that the goal of the new counteroffensive was to move closer to Crimea’s borders and then start negotiations with Moscow. According to the Ukrainian president, it is “absolutely clear, logical rhetoric“.

As for the end of hostilities, Zelensky believes that they should end with “justice and peace” and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He emphasized that ending the “hot phase” of the conflict and freezing it does not mean its end.

In an interview with Reuters in June, Trump did not rule out that Ukraine will have to give up some territories.

The United States is one of the largest providers of military aid to Ukraine: according to the Pentagon, Washington has provided Kiev $39.7 billion worth of weapons since the beginning of hostilities. Moscow condemned the supply of weapons to Kiev.

A number of politicians have expressed the opinion that the US presidential election will play an important role in the conflict in Ukraine. Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Trump’s victory will mean “the end of Ukraine”.
