According to The Washington Post, Biden has received classified reports about origin of COVID-19 of the Intelligence Community. The hope is that the report will lead to a better understanding of the origins of COVID-19, but the US Intelligence Community has reportedly still been unable to reach a consensus on whether the virus emerged naturally or originated in a laboratory.
The Intelligence Community report leaves many questions still unanswered, according to The Washington Post, including how the virus was able to pass from animals to humans, how it got out of the lab and when and where the pandemic started.
Answering those questions will largely depend on China’s cooperation, which is unlikely to be accepted by the United States and even the global community. Many also question China’s ability to be honest, given the closed nature of the country, making it difficult for people to believe what they are told about the early days of the pandemic.
China vehemently denies that the pandemic stemmed from a laboratory leak, accusing those developing theories of using the pandemic to further its anti-China agenda. Ahead of the report’s release, the Global Times, a state-run media outlet denounced the investigation into the origins of COVID-19 as being led by the Intelligence Community and not scientists.
“Having an intelligence team to look for the origin of the virus is quite laughable, and it’s not surprising that Biden would end up without a definitive answer, but if Biden seeks another investigation, it will lower his administration’s credibility and make him a laughing stock,” said Yang Zhanqiu, a virologist at Wuhan University. , to the quoted Global Times Newsweek, Wednesday (25/8/2021).
In May, Biden ordered the Intelligence Community to redouble their efforts to bring the world closer to a definitive conclusion regarding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of giving the order, two elements of the Intelligence Community gravitated towards the hypothesis that COVID-19 originated naturally and one gravitated toward a laboratory accident.
