US Government to Pay $144.5 Million to Victims of Texas Church Shooting

The US government is paying 144.5 million dollars (more than 132 million euros) to victims and their relatives of a shooting in the state of Texas. The 2017 church shooting killed 26 people and injured 22.

The shooter, a former soldier, should never have bought the guns he used in the Sutherland Springs shooting. A military court had found the man guilty of domestic violence, but that had not been reported to the FBI. This allowed him to legally obtain firearms.

A court had previously ruled that the Air Force must pay $ 230 million for not sharing information about the shooter.

The US Department of Justice appealed, but has now reached a settlement with the victims. The ministry announced the settlement with the more than 75 plaintiffs on Wednesday.

The man killed himself after the incident. It was the worst mass shooting in Texas history, where gun laws are relatively lenient.

According to The New York Times this is one of the highest amounts ever in this type of business. However, a court still has to give a formal green light for it.
