US demands clarification from Kazakhstan about the CSTO

US demands clarification from Kazakhstan why CSTO assistance was needed

In the United States, they believe that the Kazakh authorities had to independently cope with the challenges within the country.

The White House asked Kazakhstan for an explanation of why the country turned to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) amid riots inside the country. This was announced on Sunday, January 9, by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a conversation with CNN.

“We have a question why they turned to this organization, which is dominated by Russia,” Blinken said.

The US Secretary of State stressed that the Kazakh authorities should independently and peacefully cope with the challenges that appear, and most importantly, protect the institutions of the state and the rule of law.

“We ask for clarification on this. But what is needed now is that all this be resolved peacefully, with respect for the rights of those who are trying to make their voices heard,” Blinken added.

It is known that on January 5, Kazakh President Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev appealed to the countries of the Collective Security Treaty (CSTO) with a request to send troops to fight “terrorists”. Russia sent troops to quell protests in Kazakhstan. Also Belarus sent its military by Russian planes. The same decisions were made by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

After the arrival of the Russian military, the Kazakh authorities said that as of January 7, they had almost suppressed the protests and restored “order.” At the same time, Tokayev instructed the army to shoot to kill the protesters.

It was previously reported that Germany has stopped supplying weapons to Kazakhstan because of the permission of President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev to open fire on protesters without warning.
