US Congressman Confesses to Deceitful Behavior

George Santos

NOS News

Controversial US Congressman George Santos has admitted to buying clothes with stolen checks in the past, CNN reports. The Republican was charged in Brazil for this.

The news channel reports that Santos has now confessed and will compensate the damage of several hundred euros. Prosecutors cannot comment on the outcome because a gag order has been agreed. Judges can settle cases without trial if a sentence would be less than 4 years and no violence was used.

George Santos was elected to Congress in November last year for a New York constituency. It soon became clear that he had often lied about his life. For example, he had not had a prestigious education and he had never been employed by some famous banks. He also lied that his grandparents had survived the Holocaust and his mother had died from 9/11.

Donations for a service dog

In addition, there were several criminal cases against Santos, such as the accusation that he had pocketed donations for a veteran’s service dog, defrauded dog breeders and thus issued fake checks in Brazil, the country of his parents’ birth. The latter case now came to court due to all the attention for Santos’ past.

Although Santos came under increasing fire because of all the lies and accusations, he has so far refused to give up his seat in Congress. According to him, it is up to the voters in his district to decide whether or not to vote him out in next year’s election.
