US condemns Hong Kong election system reform movement | Voice of America

The U.S. government is strongly criticizing the Chinese authorities’ move to reform the Hong Kong election system, and says it is seeking international solidarity to counter it.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a telephone conference on the 5th that the reform of the election system promoted by the Chinese authorities “goes head-on against the Hong Kong Framework Act, which states that Hong Kong elections should be conducted in a universal suffrage.”

Therefore, he stressed that this is “a direct attack on Hong Kong’s autonomy, freedom and democratic process,” and that “if this measure is implemented, Hong Kong’s democratic system will be greatly undermined.”

In addition, Price said the United States condemns China’s continued attacks on Hong Kong’s democratic system.

“We urge China to uphold its international obligations and commitments and continue to act in accordance with the Hong Kong Framework Act.”

The spokeswoman also said the alliance and partners are working together to bring a single voice to accuse Chinese authorities of abuse of Islamic minorities in Xinjiang and the crackdown on Hong Kong.

At the 4th annual meeting of the 13th National People’s Congress, which opened on the 5th, China emphasized the principle of’Hong Kong ruled by patriots’ and formalized the necessity of reorganizing the election system in Hong Kong.

It is known that the reorganization details include increasing the number of pro-Chinese forces in the Hong Kong executive minister’s electoral group, and selecting 30 legislative members from the electoral group.
