US authorities are repealing Trump’s zero tolerance rule for migration

Acting Justice Secretary Monty Wilkinson said in new instructions to federal prosecutors that the ministry was returning to its previous practice of examining cases individually.

The “zero tolerance” policy meant that any adult caught crossing the border illegally had to be prosecuted for it. Children cannot be imprisoned with their relatives, so families have been divided and children have been sent to facilities run by the Ministry of Health. Such a fate befell more than 5,500 minors, according to the AP agency.

In 2018, the distribution was stopped, but even then it continued on a smaller scale. The parents of some of these children have meanwhile been deported by US authorities, and there are rumors that the administration of new President Joe Biden should allow for family reunification. The abolition of the “zero tolerance” rule will mainly affect decisions on cases of single childless men who have entered the United States illegally.
