NEW YORK United States of America (USA), along with UK, blocked UN Security Council (DK). to issue a statement condemning the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) operations in the Gaza Strip. This was stated by the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan.

“We managed to block any criticism of Israel with the help of the US, with which we worked,” he told Israeli Army Radio.

“The US, along with the UK, clarified that they will not allow statements,” he added The Jerusalem PostFriday (12/5/2023).

Erdan was speaking after the 15-member Security Council held a closed meeting on Thursday on the situation in the Gaza Strip at the request of the United Arab Emirates, France and China, with Russia’s support.

The US and Britain, along with Russia, China and France, are among the five UNSC members who have a permanent seat on the council and veto power.

Their opposition to the issuance of such statements or condemnations meant the matter never came to a vote. The US, including during Joe Biden’s presidency, has a strong record of supporting Israel in the United Nations, particularly in the Security Council.

Erdan himself was unsuccessful in pushing the UN Security Council to condemn the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Palestinian militants.

Following the meeting, Switzerland, which holds the UNSC rotating presidency for this, said on Twitter it was alarmed by the outbreak of violence between Israel and Gaza this week, in which the IDF killed three Islamic Jihad commanders as well as the head of its rocket launcher squad.
