US and British authorities warn against traveling to Kabul airport

“Due to security threats outside the gates of Kabul Airport, we recommend that American citizens avoid traveling to the airport and currently avoid airport gates unless they receive individual instructions from a US government representative,” the embassy said in a statement.

Reuters warned that the embassy did not give any reasons for the warning.

However, on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden, when he refused to extend the air bridge until September, said that the sooner the evacuation ended the better, because every day there is a risk of a terrorist attack by a local branch of the Islamic State.

The British warn of the threat of a terrorist attack

The British Foreign Office now advises all British citizens not to travel to Afghanistan, as the security situation there remains unstable, with a high threat of a terrorist attack.

The British are also to avoid traveling to Kabul International Airport.

“If you are in the airport area, move to a safe place and wait for the next announcement,” the warning said. The same warning was issued by the Australian authorities.

“There is a persistent and very high threat of a terrorist attack,” said Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne.

The radical Taliban movement took control of Afghanistan, including the capital, two weeks ago during a lightning offensive. This triggered a rapid wave of evacuations of foreigners and Afghans who collaborated with foreign missions and are now afraid for their lives.

Since then, according to the United States, 82,300 people have been evacuated from the country. The evacuations are due to end on August 31, when the US troops are to withdraw.
