Uruguay coach Tabarez sacked | Football Nachrichten.de

After 15 years in a row, Oscar Tabarez has been sacked as coach of the Uruguayan national soccer team. The 74-year-old, who worked practically in the same period of time as the recently resigned national coach Joachim Löw, last lost four times in a row with the Seleccion in the South American World Cup qualification, Uruguay is therefore now outside the qualifying zone for the World Cup finals in the Eliminatorias 2022 in Qatar.

Tabarez, who was reverently called “El Maestro” at home, had coached the two-time world champion for the first time at the 1990 World Cup, then took the helm for the second time in 2006 and led the team around star striker Luis Suarez to three World Cup tournaments in a row. The greatest success, however, was the 2011 Copa America triumph in neighboring Argentina.
