The department of Santa Cruz has experienced a worrying increase in cases of whooping cough or Coqueluche, according to epidemiological report #30 presented this Saturday. The situation has generated alarm among the health authorities, especially due to the high incidence of the disease in children under 5 years of age who have not received the vaccine or have an incomplete vaccination schedule.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Pailón, Cotoca and Roboré have registered a significant increase in positive cases of whooping cough. In addition, new cases have been detected in towns such as Lagunillas, Puerto Suárez, La Guardia and El Torno, while the results of other municipalities with suspects are awaited.

So far, the number of hospitalized for the disease amounts to 23, of which five are in a critical situation. Unfortunately, two deaths due to whooping cough have been reported so far in 2023 in the department of Santa Cruz.

The epidemiological report highlights that 372 positive cases of coqueluche have been confirmed in the department, which represents a significant increase in the last four weeks, with 186 new cases registered.

The Departmental Health Service (SEDES) has expressed concern about the low vaccination coverage with pentavalent, a vaccine that protects against five diseases, including whooping cough. According to statistics, the coverage of this vaccine has not exceeded 50%, which has left a large number of children vulnerable to this dangerous disease.

The health authorities have made an urgent call to the population to update the vaccination scheme for children and for parents and caregivers to understand the importance of immunization to prevent potentially fatal diseases such as whooping cough.
