Updated Protocol for Insurance Examinations: Removal of HIV Test Request – Dutch Association of Insurers, KNMG doctors’ federation, and Netherlands Patients’ Federation

The Dutch Association of Insurers, the KNMG doctors’ federation and the Netherlands Patients’ Federation have drawn up an updated protocol for insurance examinations. The most important change is the removal of the possibility to request an HIV test in certain cases when applying for life or disability insurance.

The new protocol takes effect on July 1, 2023 and is binding on all members of the Association. There is an implementation period of six months. The document was drawn up by the Association, in consultation with the KNMG and the Netherlands Patient Federation, and coordinated with the HIV Association.

An update of the protocol was desirable in view of the changed practice at insurers, new laws and regulations and accessible language. Agreements that already applied have also been laid down, such as provisions from the clean slate scheme for ex-cancer patients and the rule that no questions are asked about preventive operations and treatments related to hereditary predisposition.

The protocol describes the procedure for the inspection/acceptance of income protection insurance and life insurance up to the legal question limit.
