recently in France enterovirus(Echovirus-11 (E-11)) has been reported to increase cases of severe neonatal sepsis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 31st that a total of 9 cases of neonatal sepsis accompanied by liver failure and multi-organ failure were reported in 4 hospitals in 3 regions of France from July of last year to April of this year.

As of May 5 this year, seven newborns have died as a result, and two are still hospitalized in the neonatal unit.

“The current increase in incidence and severity in neonates associated with a previously undetected recombinant strain of E-11 in France is considered unusual due to the extremely rapid deterioration and associated mortality among affected babies.”

Echovirus 11 (E-11) is a positive-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Enterovirus of the Picornaviridae family. A total of 443 enterovirus neonatal infections, including seven deaths, were reported in France last year. Of these, 72% had a known enteric virus. However, the WHO assessed the public health risk to the general population as low despite the alarming nature of the increase.

What is Enterovirus?

Enteroviruses are RNA viruses, a group of viruses that can cause various epidemics and cause annual epidemics. More than 90 serotypes have been reported to date, and about 65 serotypes are known to infect humans.

It is a virus that is very common around us and is transmitted by direct person-to-person contact. Direct contact with feces or secretions of patients is the main source of infection. There are multiple routes of transmission, including exposure to the mother’s blood, secretions and/or feces, particularly during the neonatal period, or close contact with an infected caregiver after birth. Although the disease is usually mild, it has been found to affect newborns differently, sometimes more severe than older children and adults.

Infection can cause severe inflammatory disease in newborns, including severe acute hepatitis with coagulopathy. Infections are often asymptomatic, but some can present as respiratory infections, and symptoms include fever, runny nose, and weakness.

Each year, individual cases or outbreaks occur worldwide, and mainly occur in summer or early autumn in temperate regions. In Korea, aseptic meningitis caused by enterovirus is prevalent periodically every 2-3 years. Enterovirus infection was designated as a statutory infectious disease (designated infectious disease) in June 2009, and laboratory surveillance is being operated.
