A rather unusual discovery was made by some doctors in Missouri who, during a routine colonoscopy, found a completely intact fly in the intestine of a 63-year-old man. The bizarre case was mentioned in an article fromAmerican Journal of Gastroenterology.
The discovery during the exam
As reported, among others, the “The Independent”, the colonoscopy appeared to proceed normally until doctors reached the transverse colon in the large intestine and came across the bug. Matthew Bechtold, chief of gastroenterology at the University of Missouri, explained that he and other doctors touched the fly with the instrument used for the examination and confirmed that it was dead. The patient was completely shocked by the discovery and declared that he had no idea how the insect had entered his body. In particular, he said that he had only consumed liquids before the operation and, two days before, that he had eaten pizza and lettuce. And that I had no particular symptoms that suggested anything strange. The results of the test, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, represent a “very rare finding as well as a mystery as to how the intact fly managed to penetrate the transverse colon”, the experts reported.
The other similar cases
There have been other rare cases in the past where insects remained intact throughout their journey through the digestive system, specialists confirmed. In some cases, for example, flies and larvae have entered a human being and infested the intestine, in a phenomenon known as “intestinal myiasis”. According to the National Library of Medicine, insects can lay eggs on food, which is then consumed, and, in rare cases, survive the stomach acid and gastrointestinal environment. In other cases where larvae were found in the stool of some patients, they experienced diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
