Unsleep drowsiness and ability to drive

Picnics and barbecues in nature, trips or parties in the summer are often associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. We are not at all aware that, after this kind of rest and entertainment, some of us are not able to drive either the same evening or the next day – even though our blood alcohol level is close to zero.

As the restrictions and bans caused by the Covid-19 pandemic ease, more and more people are meeting friends, going on holiday trips or attending small parties. Alcoholic beverages are also often used in such events. It is important to remember that people who plan to drink alcohol should first find accommodation or transport to return home. It is equally important to understand that after drinking alcohol, it is very likely that the person will not be able to drive on their own.

You should not sit behind the wheel of a car if you drink only one glass of wine or beer – this amount of alcohol can also affect your ability to drive. Many drivers, although aware of this possibility, sit behind the wheel the next morning after a party that lasted all night. Such actions can have tragic consequences.

“The speed at which the body metabolizes or processes alcohol is very different. It depends, for example, on weight, gender, age, medication used or metabolism. Therefore, if you drink more alcohol than recommended at rest, and even if you feel asleep, it is very likely that you are still intoxicated, ”explains Christopher Pela, an expert at the Renault School of Safe Driving.

Even the breathalyzer test and the lowest blood alcohol level of 0.2 per mille do not provide confidence that we can drive safely. According to research at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, hangovers also have a negative effect on psychomotor skills, short- and long-term memory, and concentration. This effect occurs the day after evening / night, when more alcohol has been consumed than recommended, even if these substances are virtually no longer present in the driver’s blood. *

“The safety of passengers and other road users depends not only on the driver’s physical and emotional condition. That is why it is very important not to sit behind the wheel under the influence of psychoactive substances and always sleep well, ”emphasizes Christoph Pela.
