Unrest in South Africa: more than 2,500 people detained; 212 people died – in the world

According to the government, the death toll in the unrest in South Africa (South Africa) has reached 212, while many others have been injured.

Despite some outbreaks of violence, particularly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the situation has been brought under general control by the army and major transport routes have been cleared, authorities said on Friday.

To date, more than 2,500 people have been detained.

The riots last week were sparked by protests against Zuma’s imprisonment.

As reported, on June 29, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt of court without attending a hearing on corruption charges against him.

Zuma, who held the presidency from 2009 to 2018, has been charged with corruption, money laundering, fraud and racketeering.

Protests soon escalated into violence and shoplifting escalated into poor urban areas.
