It was getting colder on the morning of today, the 3rd (Sunday). More than 700 locations across the country experienced winter days with minimum temperatures below 0°C. This is the first time in eight years since 2016 that Nagoya, Kyoto, and Hiroshima experienced winter in March.

Coldest morning in 8 years

Today, the 3rd (Sunday), was a cold morning due to cold air in the upper atmosphere and increasing radiation cooling. Of the locations nationwide where the Japan Meteorological Agency monitors temperatures, 735 locations across the country had winter days with minimum temperatures below 0°C, and this was the first time since January 25th that there were more than 700 locations in March. This is the first time in eight years since 2016.

The lowest temperature in the country was -21.7℃ in Sugadaira, Nagano Prefecture. In addition, Nagoya city -0.5℃, Kyoto city -1.1℃, and Hiroshima city -1.2℃, making it the first time since 2016 that a winter day will occur in March.

The sun is warm during the day today. Be careful of temperature differences.

Today, the 3rd (Sunday), it will be sunny in many places during the day, and temperatures are expected to rise steadily.

The maximum temperature will be around 11℃ to 14℃ in many places from Kyushu to Kanto, which will be about 10℃ higher than the morning temperature. As the temperature difference will be large, please wear clothes that are easy to adjust when going out. The temperature in Hokuriku and Tohoku will be around 7℃ to 10℃, which will also be higher than yesterday, and the cold will ease. In areas where there is a lot of snow, avalanches are something to be careful of as temperatures rise. Avalanche advisories have also been issued mainly from Hokkaido to Tohoku on the Sea of Japan side.

There are two types of avalanches

When snow accumulates, avalanches are more likely to occur. An avalanche is a phenomenon in which snow piled up on a slope slides down due to gravity, and there are two types of avalanches.

One is “surface avalanche.” This is a phenomenon where newly fallen snow slides down on top of old snow that has accumulated on the mountain. It tends to occur on steep mountain slopes during the cold winter months of January and February, and often occurs on slopes where snow canopies or snowdrifts have formed.
The other type is “full-thickness avalanche.” This is a phenomenon where all the snow that has piled up on the mountain slides down. This often occurs in early spring when the temperature rises, after it rains, or when the temperature rises due to the Fohn phenomenon, and hard, heavy snow on the slope slides down. Be especially careful on slopes where avalanches have occurred in the past or where there are cracks in the snow.
