Unlawful eviction leads to landlord disposing of tenant’s belongings and burning cars in retaliation, resulting in €18,500 award

Gabriela Lake and her youngest daughter have been embroiled in a six-month legal battle to retrieve their possessions following an unlawful eviction from their rental home in Skibbereen, Co Cork. Landlord Colin O’Sullivan has admitted to disposing of their belongings, including sentimental items belonging to Ms. Lake’s late husband, valuable clothing and jewelry, and important documents, due to his inability to pay for storage. Despite repeated appeals, O’Sullivan refused to respond or allow Ms. Lake back into the property. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) subsequently awarded her €18,500 and directed O’Sullivan to return her belongings, but to no avail. Investigations into the alleged destruction and disposal of her possessions and criminal damage to her burnt-out car are ongoing.
