University Hospital Würzburg: Digital information evening on irritable bowel syndrome

An expert from the Würzburg University Hospital will provide information on diagnostics, treatment and nutrition for irritable bowel syndrome in a webinar on Wednesday, March 30th. The free public event is a joint project with the Main-Post media group, according to the press release from the university hospital.

Painful, stressful and widespread, but often without a concrete identifiable cause – irritable bowel syndrome is a disease that raises many questions for those affected. Prof. Dr. Alexander Meining, the head of gastroenterology at the Medical Clinic and Polyclinic II of the UKW, and the dietician Constanze Wolz, also from Medical Clinic II, will explain key aspects of the disease in the webinar.

Exclusion diagnosis important

“The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome range from nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, a feeling of pressure and fullness to diarrhea or constipation,” says Prof. Meining and continues: “These are so unspecific that other diseases with similar symptoms first have to be ruled out.” At the information evening it will become clear which investigations are useful here.

The main reason for the multifaceted irritable bowel syndrome is a changed interaction of the intestinal nervous system with the central and vegetative nervous system. In addition, immunological processes, psychological influences, a changed intestinal flora, intestinal infections and other factors can play a role. “The individually selectable therapy options are correspondingly broad,” reports Prof. Meining. These range from drugs with various targets to cognitive behavioral therapy and hypnosis, as the participants of the event will experience.

For an adapted diet

An adapted diet can also be helpful. Constanze Wolz will answer what is possible here and what healthy and tasty food can look like.

The event, jointly organized by the Würzburg University Hospital and the Main-Post media group, begins at 6 p.m. and uses the Zoom platform. Requirements for participation are an internet connection and a smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC.

For the transmission of the access data it is important to register exclusively with the Main-Post on Tel: (0931) 6001 6001 or at http://akademie.mainpost.de.
