US families could get an additional $6,000 a year payment while a lawmaker continues to push through a plan.
The universal basic income proposal comes from District 6 Councilmember DaJuan Gay, the Capital Gazette reports.
If passed, it would give 100 families in Annapolis, Maryland, $500 per month; for a year, it would be $6,000.
The plan would cost $800,000 and be funded by aid provided under the American Bailout Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in March 2021.
How could the program
While details are unclear as to the revenue and length of the program, Gay noted that it would take the form of another UBI initiative that was launched in Stockton, California.
The program awarded qualified residents $500 per month for two years through February 2021 and included 125 beneficiaries.

The program required income to be less than $46,034.
Results found that income volatility among participants was reduced and helped them find full-time work.
Along with Mr. Gay, Councilmembers Rob Savidge from Ward 7 and Ross Arnett from Ward 8, support a UBI plan that would address income inequality.
However, both raised concerns regarding long-term financing.
This is the second year in a row that Mr. Gay has pushed the City Council to implement a UBI program.
But it’s not clear whether the Democrats’ proposal will garner enough support this time.
Mr. Gay’s office did not respond to The Sun’s request for comment when asked for further details.
Other UBI programs across the country
Annapolis isn’t the only city in the country considering a UBI plan.
In fact, several cities and states across the country are offering UBI payments to select residents.
This includes Minneapolis, Minnesota, which will start sending $500 each month for two years.
To qualify, you must have experienced financial hardship during the pandemic, with an annual income of 50% of the area median.
Under Ithaca, New York’s guaranteed income program, payments worth $450 will be given to 110 residents for a total of 12 months.
These will go to caregivers with an annual income of 80% of the area median.
Additionally, about 15,000 students will receive $5,000 over five months in California as a bill passed by the Senate.
