United States: Unemployment claims fall more than expected

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Weekly jobless claims fell more than expected last week in the United States as layoffs declined as companies ramp up hires to meet increased demand fueled by the recovery in the economy. economy.

Registrations fell to 406,000, the lowest number recorded since mid-March 2020, from 444,000 during the week to May 22, the Labor Department said Thursday.

They remain below the 500,000 mark for the third week in a row. Economists expected an average of 425,000 jobless claims.

The four-week moving average fell sharply to 458,750 from 504,750 the week before. The number of people receiving regular benefits was reduced to 3.642 million during the week to May 15 (last week for which these figures are available) against 3.738 million the previous week.
